My name is Elizabeth (yoda). I have chosen the user name yoda because my two kids just love him and they say I am old like him. I am a native from Los Angeles and come from a family of seven siblings. My parents are first generation immigrants from Mexico. I am the first in my family to attend college and have lead one of my younger siblings through the college process. This is my second tour through college after 13 years of being in the work force. I have been faced with many new changes in the college arena.
When I first went to college there was no MLA writing style. You wrote the introduction, body and conclusion. I came to CSUN and in my first class the instructor was discussing MLA. I felt I was in an algebra class for the first time. Needless to say I went to see her during her office hours. What a relief that explanation was.
I hope to become an English/Literature teacher. I had good and horrible teachers in high school. I knew then that I could do a better job at making such a disliked course enjoyable. I say disliked because it was not one of my favorite subjects and to this date I don't feel I am a great writer, but I make an effort. My fear is while I am explaining the MLA writing style all the students are text messaging and not paying attention. Or I have given an exam and more than half the class has failed. This reflects on my teaching style and not being able to capture their attention to make it easy to remember during the exam. I think I will constantly remind myself of the teachers that were not good and make sure I am not making those same mistakes and fail at exposing these teens to how fun English and Literature can be.
